Tierra Amarilla, population approximately 500, is the seat of Rio Arriba County, located along US Highway 84 in the Chama River valley at 7,455 feet elevation. The village has deep roots in New Mexico's Spanish land grant history and was the site of the famous 1967 courthouse raid led by Reies López Tijerina in the land grant rights movement. The Rio Arriba County Courthouse remains the center of local government.
