The county seat is Socorro, a university town at 4,585 feet elevation along the Rio Grande, approximately 75 miles south of Albuquerque on Interstate 25. Elevation across the county varies from approximately 4,400 feet in the valley to over 9,000 feet in the Magdalena Mountains.
