Magdalena, New Mexico Real Estate

Magdalena is a small village in western Socorro County, with a 2020 Census population of 899, situated at 6,548 feet on U.S. Highway 60 approximately 27 miles west of Socorro. Historically a cattle-shipping railhead (the Magdalena Stock Driveway, one of the last great cattle drives in the U.S., operated until 1971), Magdalena today has an emerging arts community and is the nearest town to the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope. The Magdalena Mountains rise directly behind the town.

Real Estate and Lifestyle

Magdalena offers some of the most affordable real estate in Socorro County and represents an increasingly popular alternative for buyers seeking small-town New Mexico character, mountain proximity, and access to the Highway 60 corridor without Socorro's university-driven prices. A growing number of artists, retirees, and remote workers have relocated to Magdalena in recent years, gradually broadening the economic base beyond ranching. Magdalena Municipal Schools serves local students. The Magdalena Mountains provide hiking access, and the VLA visitor center is 20 miles to the west. Water access can be a consideration for rural parcels in the surrounding area.
