Historically a cattle-shipping railhead (the Magdalena Stock Driveway, one of the last great cattle drives in the U.S., operated until 1971), Magdalena today has an emerging arts community and is the nearest town to the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope. The Magdalena Mountains rise directly behind the town.
