Catron County is the largest county by area in New Mexico, encompassing approximately 6,928 square miles of high-desert mountains, grasslands, and ponderosa pine forests in the southwestern corner of the state. Despite its vast size, the county recorded a population of just 3,527 in the 2020 U.S. Census, making it one of the least-densely populated counties in the entire contiguous United States. The county seat is Reserve.

The county sits atop the Colorado Plateau transition zone and includes portions of the Mogollon Mountains, the Plains of San Agustin, and the upper reaches of the San Francisco and Gila rivers. Elevations range from around 4,500 feet on the lower San Francisco River drainage to over 10,000 feet on Whitewater Baldy, the highest peak in the Mogollon Range. The Gila National Forest dominates the county, and Catron contains the Gila Wilderness, which was designated in 1924 as America's first congressionally protected wilderness area.

Catron County's economy is built primarily on ranching, logging, small-scale tourism, and government employment. The U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management are among the county's largest employers. Cattle ranching on extensive acreages has defined the local economy for over a century. Tourism tied to hunting, fly-fishing, hiking, and the Gila hot springs brings seasonal visitors and supports small lodging and outfitter operations. The county has no significant industrial base, and residents often travel to Silver City (Grant County) for major shopping, medical care, and other services.
School Districts
Catron County School District serves the entire county with schools in Reserve and a limited number of satellite facilities. The small student population reflects the county's sparse demographics. Many families in outlying communities rely on home schooling or distance-learning programs.
