Grant County occupies the mountainous southwest corner of New Mexico, covering approximately 3,968 square miles. The 2020 Census recorded a county population of 26,998. The county seat is Silver City, an artistically vibrant small city at 5,895 feet elevation that has emerged as one of the most compelling small-town real estate destinations in the Mountain West. The county is bounded on the north and west by Catron and Hidalgo counties and shares a short stretch of the Mexican border on its southwestern edge.
Geography and Climate
Grant County is defined by the transition between the Chihuahuan Desert to the south and the Mogollon Highlands to the north. The Pinos Altos Range and Black Range rise above the central county, while the Mimbres River flows south through the eastern portion and the Gila River drainage feeds into the north. Silver City sits at nearly 6,000 feet, giving it a four-season climate with summer monsoons, occasional winter snow, and far more moderate temperatures than the surrounding desert. The Gila National Forest covers much of the northern county.
Economy and Major Employers
Grant County's economy has historically been driven by copper mining. The Chino Mine operated by Freeport-McMoRan near Bayard and Hurley is one of the oldest continuously operated open-pit copper mines in the United States and remains a major employer. Western New Mexico University (WNMU) in Silver City is both an important employer and a cultural anchor. Healthcare, government, and a growing arts-and-tourism sector round out the economy. Silver City has attracted significant numbers of retirees, artists, and remote workers over the past two decades, diversifying the local economic base.
School Districts
Silver City Consolidated School District is the county's primary K-12 system. Cobre Consolidated Schools serves the mining communities of Bayard, Hurley, and Santa Clara. Western New Mexico University offers four-year degree programs and graduate education, providing higher-education access without leaving the county.

Silver City has developed a genuine destination real estate market, with buyers arriving from across the country attracted by its walkable historic downtown, vibrant gallery scene, mild climate, and real estate prices that remain well below comparable arts communities like Taos or Sedona.
