Spiritual Life in Santa Fe: Churches, Healing, and Sacred Spaces

Santa Fe sits at the intersection of multiple spiritual traditions — Native American, Catholic, Buddhist, New Age, and more. The city has been considered a place of spiritual power and healing for centuries. Whether you're drawn to the quiet of a 400-year-old mission church, the meditation hall of a Zen center, or the more eclectic healing practices that have flourished here since the 1960s, there's a spiritual community for you.

Historic Churches and Sacred Sites

  • Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi — The iconic French Romanesque cathedral on the east side of the Plaza, built between 1869 and 1886 by Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy. Inside, you'll find La Conquistadora, the oldest Madonna statue in the United States.
  • Loretto Chapel — Famous for its "miraculous" spiral staircase, built without a central support or nails. The story of its mysterious carpenter is part of Santa Fe legend. Small admission fee; worth a visit.
  • San Miguel Mission — Often called the oldest church in the United States (though the claim is debated). The adobe structure on Old Santa Fe Trail dates to approximately 1610.
  • Santuario de Chimayó — About 30 miles north of Santa Fe, this small church is called the "Lourdes of America." Pilgrims travel from across the country — many walking the final miles on Good Friday — to visit the small hole of "holy dirt" believed to have healing properties. Over 300,000 people visit annually.
  • Cristo Rey Church — One of the largest adobe structures in the United States, built in 1940. Houses a magnificent stone reredos (altar screen) carved in 1760.

Meditation and Contemplative Practice

  • Upaya Zen Center — A residential Zen Buddhist practice center on Cerro Gordo Road, led by Roshi Joan Halifax. Public meditation sessions, retreats, and dharma talks. The grounds are peaceful and the center is a genuine practice community, not a tourist attraction.
  • Santa Fe Vipassana Sangha — Insight meditation group meeting regularly for guided meditation and dharma discussion.
  • Immaculate Heart of Mary Retreat Center — Catholic retreat center offering silent retreats and spiritual direction, in a quiet setting south of town.

Holistic and Alternative Healing

Santa Fe has one of the highest concentrations of alternative health practitioners in the country. Acupuncture, energy work, herbal medicine, sound healing, and bodywork of every variety are widely available.

  • Santa Fe School of Massage & Acupuncture — Offers reduced-rate treatments from advanced students under supervision.
  • New Mexico Academy of Healing Arts — Training school with a public clinic for massage and bodywork.
  • The city has numerous individual practitioners in Reiki, craniosacral therapy, shamanic healing, and other modalities. Ask locally for recommendations — word of mouth is how most people find their practitioners here.
