Education, Bookstores, and Intellectual Life in Santa Fe

Santa Fe's identity as a cultural capital extends well beyond the visual arts. The city has a thriving intellectual community built around independent bookstores, writing programs, a deep commitment to education, and a population that values curiosity and conversation. It's the kind of place where you can hear a Pulitzer Prize-winning author give a reading on a Tuesday night.

Higher Education

  • St. John's College — A "Great Books" liberal arts college on the east side of Santa Fe. The curriculum is built entirely around seminal texts from Homer to Einstein. The campus, with its views of the Sangre de Cristos, is worth a visit even if you're not a student.
  • Santa Fe University of Art and Design — Focused on film, art, and design programs. The campus hosts screenings, exhibitions, and lectures open to the public.
  • Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) — Offers associate degrees and vocational programs, including excellent culinary and brewing programs.
  • Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) — The only college in the country dedicated to contemporary Native American arts. Their museum on the south side of town is open to the public and features stunning exhibitions.
