Gallup, population 21,899 (2020 Census), is the McKinley County seat and the largest city on Interstate 40 between Albuquerque and Flagstaff. Known as the "Indian Capital of the World," Gallup has served as the principal trade center for the Navajo Nation and Zuni Pueblo for over a century. The city's historic downtown along Route 66 features art deco architecture, trading posts, and galleries specializing in Native American jewelry, rugs, pottery, and kachinas.

Housing & Character

Gallup offers very affordable housing with median prices among the lowest of any New Mexico city. The housing stock ranges from historic homes near downtown to newer subdivisions on the city's north and west sides. Red Rock State Park east of town provides a dramatic sandstone backdrop. The city's cultural vibrancy — including the annual Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, the Gallup Cultural Center, and dozens of trading posts — gives it a character unlike any other community in the American West.
