Des Moines is a small community in the volcanic uplands of Union County, situated at approximately 6,600 feet elevation near the base of Sierra Grande — a massive shield volcano and the largest of its kind in New Mexico at 8,720 feet. The 2020 Census recorded a population of 114. The community is close to Capulin Volcano National Monument, one of the most accessible extinct cinder-cone volcanoes in the United States and a notable regional attraction drawing visitors year-round.
