It sits at 4,061 feet elevation, 35 miles south of Deming on New Mexico Highway 11, directly across the border from Palomas, Chihuahua, Mexico. Columbus is historically famous as the site of Pancho Villa's March 9, 1916 raid — the last armed foreign attack on U.S. soil — which is commemorated at Pancho Villa State Park.
