Capitan is a small village in Lincoln County situated in a broad mountain valley at approximately 6,100 feet elevation, positioned between Ruidoso (25 miles east) and Carrizozo (25 miles west). The 2020 U.S. Census recorded a population of 1,489. Capitan is best known as the birthplace of Smokey Bear—the actual bear rescued from a 1950 wildfire in the nearby Lincoln National Forest—and Smokey Bear Historical Park honors this legacy. Capitan Municipal Schools serves the community. The surrounding Lincoln National Forest provides extensive recreation access.
