Acoma Pueblo — Sky City

Acoma Pueblo, known as "Sky City," is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America, with the mesa-top village occupied since at least 1150 AD. The pueblo sits atop a 367-foot sandstone mesa approximately 60 miles west of Albuquerque in Cibola County. Acoma is home to approximately 4,600 enrolled tribal members, though most reside in the villages below the mesa.

Cultural Significance

The Sky City Cultural Center and Haaku Museum welcome visitors for guided tours of the ancient mesa-top pueblo, including the San Esteban del Rey Mission built in 1629. Acoma pottery — distinguished by its thin walls and fine-line geometric designs — is among the most prized in the Native American art world. The pueblo's land is held in trust and is not available for private purchase, but the cultural tourism destination draws visitors from around the globe.
